Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors

An eigenvector of AA is a nonzero vector x\mathbf{x} such that:

Ax=λxA\mathbf{x} = \lambda\mathbf{x}

λ\lambda is the eigenvalue — the scaling factor.

Finding Eigenvalues

Solve the characteristic equation:

det⁡(A−λI)=0\det(A - \lambda I) = 0

This gives a polynomial in λ\lambda of degree nn.

Finding Eigenvectors

For each eigenvalue λi\lambda_i, solve:

(A−λiI)x=0(A - \lambda_i I)\mathbf{x} = \mathbf{0}

Key Facts

  • trace(A)=∑λi\text{trace}(A) = \sum \lambda_i
  • det⁡(A)=∏λi\det(A) = \prod \lambda_i
  • Eigenvalues of ATA^T are the same as AA
  • If AA is invertible, eigenvalues of A−1A^{-1} are 1/λi1/\lambda_i
