Applications of Determinants

Volume

∣det⁑(A)∣|\det(A)| = volume of the parallelepiped formed by the columns of AA.

  • det⁑>0\det > 0: right-handed orientation
  • det⁑<0\det < 0: left-handed orientation
  • det⁑=0\det = 0: degenerate (flat, zero volume)

Cramer’s Rule

For Ax=bAx = b with det⁑(A)β‰ 0\det(A) \neq 0:

xi=det⁑(Ai)det⁑(A)x_i = \frac{\det(A_i)}{\det(A)}

Where AiA_i is AA with column ii replaced by bb.

Area of a Triangle

For vertices (x1,y1)(x_1,y_1), (x2,y2)(x_2,y_2), (x3,y3)(x_3,y_3):

Area=12∣det⁑(x1y11x2y21x3y31)∣\text{Area} = \frac{1}{2}\left|\det\begin{pmatrix}x_1&y_1&1\\x_2&y_2&1\\x_3&y_3&1\end{pmatrix}\right|
