Pseudoinverse

The pseudoinverse A+A^+ is defined for any matrix, even non-square ones:

A+=VΣ+UTA^+ = V\Sigma^+ U^T

Where Σ+\Sigma^+ replaces each nonzero σi\sigma_i with 1/σi1/\sigma_i.

Properties

  • If AA is invertible: A+=A−1A^+ = A^{-1}
  • If AA is tall (m>nm > n, full column rank): A+=(ATA)−1ATA^+ = (A^TA)^{-1}A^T
  • If AA is wide (m<nm < n, full row rank): A+=AT(AAT)−1A^+ = A^T(AA^T)^{-1}

Solving Ax=bAx = b

  • If exact solution exists: A+bA^+b gives the minimum norm solution
  • If no exact solution: A+bA^+b gives the least squares solution

x^=A+b\hat{x} = A^+b

The Four Moore-Penrose Conditions

A+A^+ is the unique matrix satisfying:

  1. AA+A=AAA^+A = A
  2. A+AA+=A+A^+AA^+ = A^+
  3. (AA+)T=AA+(AA^+)^T = AA^+
  4. (A+A)T=A+A(A^+A)^T = A^+A
